Here are the top three stories in Reno today:

  1. On Jul. 1, Nevada will increase its minimum wage by 75 cents; however, some employees feel the increase will not significantly alleviate financial struggles for those who find it difficult to meet expenses due to high living costs. The Department of Labor adjusts the minimum wage annually based on a predetermined formula. While the wage increase benefits employees, business owners like Hope Triplett of Reno's Sierra Belle Boutique face challenges in keeping up with competitors who pay higher wages. Starting from Jul. 1 of the following year, there will be a uniform minimum wage of $12.00 per hour for all employees. (FoxReno.com)
  2. Reno Housing Authority is commencing construction on the Dick Scott Manor, a $4.8 million affordable housing project aimed at assisting low-income households and homeless veterans near Sutro Street. The initiative, which marks the first utilization of funds from the Home Means Nevada Initiative, will introduce 12 new units catering to individuals and families earning up to 50 percent of the area median income. With the Reno-Sparks region facing a scarcity of affordable housing, RHA Executive Director Hilary Lopez expressed optimism that the project will offer secure and sustainable housing options for the future. (Reno Gazette Journal)
  3. On Wednesday night, Reno firefighters swiftly extinguished a pallet fire that broke out behind the Commons Shopping Center on South Virginia St. Upon receiving the call, crews arrived before 10:00 p.m. and tackled the flames, preventing further damage. The fire department reported that the wooden pallets ignited, causing the fire to spread to the adjacent wall and roof of a nearby structure. No injuries were reported. (KTVN)
