- The University of Nevada, Reno Veterans Service department has installed a karma box in front of the Veterans Guest House to provide non-perishable goods, personal items, and food for the housing and food-insecure community. The karma box project was founded in 2018 by Grant Denton, with 50 donation boxes placed in various areas around Northern Nevada. The Veterans Guest House serves as a place for families to stay while their loved ones receive treatment at the VA hospital, and the karma box is there to help them and the larger community. - The Reno Rodeo Foundation is hosting a fundraising event, "Paint or Poker for a Purpose," at New West Distributing on Mar. 4. The event offers Texas Hold'em and painting activities with all proceeds to fund scholarships and support children and teens with extraordinary needs in 14 Northern Nevada counties. Attendees can participate in the poker tournament for a $100 buy-in, and the first-place winner will take home a $1,000 prize and a custom championship belt buckle. (KOLO)
- The median sales price for a single-family home in Reno-Sparks has decreased to $510,000 from $565,000 in January 2022; however, the rising interest rates are making some buyers hesitant. Closed sales and new listings have declined by almost 40 percent compared to last year, and homes in the area stay on the market for a median of about two months, up over 700 percent from last year. The Federal Reserve is expected to continue hiking interest rates, albeit at a slower pace, according to their meeting minutes from Feb. 1. (KRNV)
