📰 News we're reading

1. Washoe County judge dismisses lawsuit over slain Reno woman, citing wrong defendant named (mynews4.com) — A Washoe County judge has dismissed the civil lawsuit tied to the killing of Reno resident Hailey Nieto, ruling the wrong defendant was named and that alleged failures didn’t meet constitutional liability standards. The decision, issued with prejudice, ends the family’s attempt to hold the jail’s communication system and local authorities civilly accountable for violent threats sent before her murder.

2. New Reno Fire Department Dashboard (kolotv.com) — Reno residents can now explore a new online Reno Fire Department dashboard that maps where and what kinds of emergency calls are happening across the city. The tool highlights busy stations like downtown’s Station 1, shows that most calls are medical, and may guide future decisions on equipment, staffing, or new stations while inviting public feedback.

3. City of Reno to host community meeting on future of the Lear Theater (mynews4.com) — Reno residents are invited to weigh in on the long-vacant Lear Theater’s future at a Jan. 10 community meeting hosted by the city at the Reno Sparks Chamber of Commerce, with a virtual option. Your feedback will help guide the Historical Resources Commission and City Council as they consider renovation costs estimated between $18 and $25 million and potential new uses.

4. Washoe OKs $10 million grant for jail mental health program (rgj.com) — Washoe County commissioners have unanimously accepted nearly $10 million in state funding to keep the county jail’s mental health program running through 2027 and expand its services. The money will add four deputy positions and let the jail provide competency restoration treatment, aiming to divert people with mental illness who don’t need to be behind bars and improve humane care for local residents.

5. 2 Nevada attractions named on 2025's Great American Road Trip (rgj.com) — Reno’s National Automobile Museum has been named one of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s must-see stops on the 2025 Great American Road Trip. The museum is recognized for its 240-plus vintage cars and interactive exhibits, putting Reno alongside major western attractions like the Golden Gate Bridge and Old Faithful as a recommended destination for family road trips.
