Here are the top three stories in Reno today:
- Ka Pā Hula O Kawaiolanoelaniokāne, a Reno hula school, is organizing a golf tournament on Jun. 17 at Toiyabe Golf Course to raise funds for a cultural center and practice studio. The school, which started with a small group of students in 2012, has now grown to over 100 participants and needs a larger space. The event promises an awards banquet, including a buffet, a live hula show by the hālau, and a performance by a top all-female Hawaiian band, along with raffle prizes and a silent auction. Register here by Jun. 14. (KOLO)
- The Washoe County School District is seeking individuals to join various committees that advise the Board of Trustees and Superintendent on matters such as educational programs, safety, operations, and finances. These committees ensure that programs and services meet the needs of students and have the necessary resources. The application period is open until Jun. 9 and most positions are open to the general public. Learn more about the opportunity here. (Washoe Schools)
- Last month, the University of Nevada, Reno Multicultural Center's Asian Pacific Islander (API) Program celebrated AAPI Heritage Month (during the month of May) by unveiling a mural created by University alumnus Joshua Chang. The mural, painted in the Multicultural Center, was inspired by Chang's own heritage and showcased artists who influenced him. Despite initial doubts, Chang gained confidence through his experience and emphasized the importance of trusting the creative process. Click the link to view photos of Chang's mural. (Nevada Today)
