Here are the top three stories in Reno today:
- On Tuesday, the City of Reno released six preliminary ward maps as part of its redistricting process. Community members had the opportunity to provide input on these proposals during a public meeting. The redistricting committee will finalize a single map on Jul. 27, which will then be presented to the Reno City Council for approval in August. To view the preliminary maps and offer feedback, visit the City of Reno website. (KOLO)
- A man from Arizona, Charles Sullivan, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison by a Washoe County judge for the murder of Julia Woodward in 1979 near Reno. Sullivan, now 77 years old, was connected to the crime through DNA evidence found on Woodward's clothing. The breakthrough came years later when the cold case team reexamined the murder and linked the DNA to Sullivan, who had already been registered as a sex offender due to a previous sexual assault case. (KRNV)
- Washoe Regional Animal Services is considering euthanasia due to ongoing capacity issues, prompting a plea for public support from them, the Nevada Humane Society, and the SPCA of Northern Nevada. To address the crisis, they urge pet owners to promptly retrieve their pets, encourage community efforts to reunite lost dogs with their owners, advocate for pet adoption and fostering, and emphasize the importance of volunteering, donating, and providing ID tags and microchips for pets. Additionally, the Nevada Humane Society is waiving adoption fees for certain adult and small animals until Jul. 16, and the SPCA of Northern Nevada is waiving adoption fees for dogs over 45 pounds through Jul. 10.
