Here are the top three stories today in Reno:

  1. A former participant in the Reno Rodeo is taking part in a study focused on brain health in athletes. Since 2011, Dr. Charles Bernick of the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas has been conducting the study with the goal to find ways to make sports like boxing, football, and rodeo safer and protect athletes from long-term consequences. The study involves brain imaging, blood tests, and cognitive assessments to track changes in athletes' brain health over time. Former professional rodeo cowboy Ryan Gray, who was once the world's top bareback rider, is among the participants, hoping to contribute to future advancements in the understanding and treatment of brain diseases like Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). 2. Washoe County's Sol Cannabis lounge has been granted a conditional license, along with two others in Clark County. The Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board approved The Venue at Sol Cannabis, which had previously received a prospective license in November 2022. While awaiting final licensure, applicants are permitted to prepare their consumption lounges for operation under the conditional license, but they must still comply with local regulations and obtain approval from their respective jurisdictions. (KOLO)
  3. The Reno-Sparks Convention & Visitors Authority (RSCVA) has unanimously approved the purchase of a $5 million indoor track that will greatly benefit Nevada athletics. The new track will replace the previously dilapidated Bill Cosby track and is expected to attract top track athletes to Reno, potentially making it a prominent destination for world-class sports. Nevada women's track and field will have the opportunity to host multiple meets and pursue championship events, solidifying the track's transformative impact on the program. (Nevada Sports Net)
