Here are the top three stories today in Reno:
- Reno is pioneering a wastewater recycling project called OneWater Nevada, aimed at demonstrating the feasibility of converting wastewater into clean drinking water. The project, a collaboration between various organizations including the Truckee Meadows Water Authority and the University of Nevada, Reno, has successfully met national and state drinking water standards through a combination of charcoal filtering and ozone treatment. Although the recycled water will initially be used for irrigation and groundwater storage, the ultimate goal is to provide it as a new water resource for public consumption, making Reno one of the first inland communities in the nation to implement such technology. - For the first time, the University of Nevada, Reno will participate in the Northern Nevada Pride Parade on Jul. 22 with a dedicated float, thanks to the efforts of the Orvis Student Nursing Association. The Orvis Student Nursing Association has spearheaded the creation of the float, with support and funding from various entities within the university. The float aims to provide visibility and representation for nursing students, reinforcing inclusivity within the profession and demonstrating the unwavering support of nurses as allies in the healthcare field. - The Reno VFW post is undertaking a project to repair its deteriorating parking lot on Jul. 15 and 16. Despite unsuccessful fundraising efforts in the past, they aim to raise approximately $120,000 for the repairs this year. While the POBOB Motorcycle Club and Joy Engineering have generously donated labor and equipment, respectively, the VFW organizers are seeking additional donations, particularly for asphalt, to ensure smoother accessibility for individuals with mobility challenges. Today in Reno:
Friday, July 7
From my notebook:
- Over Independence Day, Reno Firefighters responded to over 12 brush fires, a structure fire, a mobile home fire, and a demanding vehicle extrication. The Reno Firefighters Association reminds residents to prioritize their safety. (Reno Firefighters Association via Facebook)
- If you encountered traffic near Geiger Grade/SR 341 near Chamy Drive east of Reno on Thursday afternoon (Jul. 6), it was likely due to a crash involving a vehicle and a bicyclist. The roadway was closed on Thursday afternoon. (KOLO)
- Last night (Jul. 6) the second annual Dancing in the Streets festival, featuring six outdoor stages and various DJs, artists, and bands, returned to Reno's Midtown District. The free, outdoor event provides a fun way for the community to connect through live music and dancing. (KTVN)
