📰 News we're reading

1. Christmas tree recycling schedule slated (kolotv.com) — Sparks residents can recycle their Christmas trees and non-working lights at Shadow Mountain Sports Complex on Sparks Boulevard and at Greater Nevada Credit Union branches in Sparks starting Dec. 26. The regional program runs through Jan. 11, suggests a $5 donation, and turns trees into mulch for local beautification projects. Volunteers are also needed at the staffed drop-off locations.

2. Lowry wrestlers start hot at Earl Wilken duals in Fallon (greatbasinsun.com) — Lowry High’s wrestlers dominated the Earl Wilken duals in Fallon, including a lopsided 78-3 win over Sparks High. Several Buckaroos went undefeated or nearly so across nine dual victories, and Lowry now turns to hosting its Cody Louk Invitational this weekend.

3. Reno Air Logistics Park ‘ready to turn and go' in North Valleys (nnbw.com) — Industrial growth north of Reno could shift some jobs and freight activity away from the aging, nearly built-out Sparks warehouse market. A new 900-acre Reno Air Logistics Park is adding modern facilities, roads, and infrastructure, aiming to keep more workers closer to home while competing with Sparks’ long-dominant industrial footprint.

4. Washoe OKs $10 million grant for jail mental health program (rgj.com) — Sparks residents should know Washoe County has secured nearly $10 million in state funding to keep and expand its jail-based mental health program through 2027, affecting people arrested anywhere in the county. The grant will add deputy positions and let the jail provide competency restoration services locally. Officials say the goal is to divert people with mental illness from unnecessary jail time.

5. New HUD guidelines could worsen Washoe County's homelessness crisis (knpr.org) — Newly withdrawn HUD guidelines had threatened key housing funds that support facilities like Hope Springs on the Reno–Sparks border, where residents work toward stability. Local officials warn that shifting money away from permanent housing, amid record Reno-Sparks rents, could worsen homelessness for vulnerable neighbors in and around Sparks.
