JAFFREY, NH — New Hampshire Fish and Game was notified by Cheshire County Dispatch of a hiker in distress on or about the Smith Connection Trail of Monadnock State Park on Thursday.

The hiker, John Sullivan, 24, of Brighton, Massachusetts, called 911 at about 5:15 p.m. because he was unable to navigate his way to the trailhead. Sullivan did not have rain gear, dry clothes, navigational tools, lights, and his cellphone was below 10 percent in battery life.

Conservation officers immediately began to coordinate rescue efforts due to the heavy rain and near-freezing temperatures. A Monadnock Park Staff member and conservation officers responded to the Old Toll Road trailhead and began hiking to attempt to locate Sullivan. Conditions on the mountain were slippery due to snow-covered trails and rain.
