Amherst Marathon Runner Sees Hope at the Finish Line

Some marathon runners are racing to challenge themselves, while others are looking to use the challenge to help others.

Adam Hawkes of Amherst is most certainly the latter. He will be running in the 117th Boston Marathon on Monday to help conquer cancer as a member of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team.

He joins over 500 Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge runners from across the country and the world, with a goal of raising $4.6 million for the Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

Runners include cancer survivors and patients, and family and friends of those who have been affected by cancer. Runners of all abilities, including some who are time-qualified to compete in the Boston Marathon, from all over the country and around the world participate with the goal to help put an end to cancer.

One hundred percent of the money raised goes towards bettering the lives of cancer patients, and research into battling the deadly condition.

Hawkes is looking for more donations to help him reach his fundraising goal. He writes:

The  Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge has raised more than $56 million since its inception in 1990, and hopes to raise $4.6 million this year.
