Amherst School Board Filing Period to Open This Week

Town residents celebration Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Day on Monday; Zoning Board of Adjustment to meet on Wednesday night.

Today is MLK Day: Monday, Jan. 20 is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, which is a federal holiday that honors the legacy of the slain Civil Rights Movement leader. The town offices, public schools and several businesses will be closed.

ZBA meeting: The town's Zoning Board of Adjustment will meet on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Town Hall.

Amherst School Board filing period this week:
Town residents who want to run for the Amherst School Board in SAU 39 can file their papers beginning on Wednesday. The filing period runs until Jan. 31 at 5 p.m. and there are four offices that will be decided by Amherst Town Meeting voters on March 11. The same filing period will be in effect for two seats on the Souhegan Co-Operative School Board and the Mont Vernon School Board.

Need to get rid of your Christmas tree:
The town's Transfer Station will continue to accept Christmas trees in the brush pile free of charge for residents who need a place to dispose of their trees.

Winter Carnival set: The Amherst Board of Selectmen recently voted to hold the town's Winter Carnival on Sunday, Feb. 9 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Middle Road.
