Here are the top stories today in Bedford:

  1. There were long lines and short tempers when American Airlines canceled more than 2,000 flights in the past four days. Everyone is feeling the impact of the pandemic causing airlines to drastically cut back on staff when demand disappeared. The airlines said that severe weather and staffing shortages have caused flight cancellations in the thousands, leaving customers to wonder what they can do when their flight is canceled or delayed. Travel expert Willis Orlando said if an airline significantly delayed or canceled your flight, "you may be eligible for a refund." Work with the airline and do your homework, Orlando said. Check your flight status often and be proactive about finding alternate flights your airline can rebook for you. Have a solution ready and know your other travel options before you fly, Orlando added. Delays and cancellations are likely, he added. Planning ahead can make your life, and your flights, a lot easier. (WMUR)
  2. Ballot Controversy: The New Hampshire Attorney General's office said that 190 absentee ballots that were never counted in the November Bedford election last year in 2020 would not have changed the outcomes of the election. Town officials said they think the mishap occurred when completed ballots were accidentally placed in a box containing empty absentee ballot envelopes. The AG's office said, other towns had votes that were mistakenly not counted, including Merrimack and Nottingham, which each had three uncounted ballots. Officials instructed all three towns "to establish new procedures to prevent this from happening again." (WMUR)
  3. It's week 43 of the Manchester InkLink Grocery Hunt. The Grocery Hunt is a weekly search by Manchester InkLink readers to find the best prices and availability of different grocery store items. This week, on Oct. 20 from noon-1 p.m., readers found prices and availability for an interesting assortment of items, including Jack Daniel’s pulled pork, (I didn't even know Jack Daniel's had pulled pork), pomegranates, leaf bags, New-England-style hot dog buns, and A1 steak sauce. How did the Bedford Target on South River Road compare? Jack Daniel's Pork, not available; Pomegranates, $2.99 per lb.; leaf bags, $ 5.69; New-England-style hot dog buns, not available; and A1 steak sauce, $4.39.
