Here are the top stories in Bedford today:
- Unexpected visitors make a 2,000-mile journey to "winter" in New Hampshire. The rough-legged hawk and snowy white owl are usually found in Alaska, Northern Canada, and the Arctic, but if you know where to look you may spot one in New Hampshire. They travel a great distance for milder New Hampshire winters. The rough-leg hawk's gets it's name because its legs are covered with feathers to protect them from the cold. Another way to identify this Arctic visitor is that they sometime can be seen floating effortlessly in the air. It's a technique called "kiting," where the hawk faces headwinds and appear to be motionless in the air. Snowy owls and our other exotic arctic guests. They always create a stir when spotted with their striking white feathers. If you happen these winter guests in the fields of Bedford, or marshes along the seacoast, experts say to observe them at a distance. They are likely weary from their long journey south. - Jason Riddle from Bedford, New Hampshire, pleaded guilty on Thursday to two federal charges for his role in the January 6 riots when he appeared before a federal judge. The first charge was for stealing items from the parliamentarian's office. The second charge was for breaching the Capitol building. (WMUR)
- A maple syrup shortage was narrowly avoided thanks to what some people say is the "OPEC" of maple syrup. Quebec Maple Syrup Producers said they will draw nearly 50 million pounds of maple syrup stored in barrels from a strategic reserve to make up for the supply shortage. The amount they will tap into is more than a third of this year’s entire harvest. The French-speaking province of Quebec produces 70 percent of the world's maple syrup. Maple producers blame the maple syrup shortage on warmer weather, a shorter spring harvest, and an increase in overseas demand. Thanks to the reserve supply, maple syrup lovers from Bedford, New Hampshire, to Bedford, England, will be able to pour maple syrup on their morning pancakes. (The Union Leader)
