Here are the top stories in Bedford today:
- Firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire at Elizabeth Way in Bedford about 5:30 p.m. on Friday. They arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the second floor of the home. A police officer attempted to enter the residence to see if anyone was inside but was pushed back by heavy smoke. Firefighters were able to enter the home and found that everyone had evacuated safely. Find out more here: (Bedford Patch)
- Bedford bride Jesse Moltenbrey bought a wedding dress preservation kit from Bed Bath & Beyond, and shipped the dress to Memories of Texas on March 16. After Bed Bath and Beyond filed for bankruptcy last week, Memories said the dress order was"on hold." Moltenbrey "was charged an extra fee on April 3," but has not received her dress. In response to complaints by Bed Bath and Beyond customers, the preservation company said, "Brides can either pay $30 in shipping fees or pay a discounted price, directly to Memories, for the preservation service." (CBS Boston)
- Bedford and Merrimack are offering PFAS rebate programs for private wells contaminated with toxic PFAS chemicals from the Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics plant. Private well owners in Bedford can now directly apply to the Town of Bedford to be reimbursed for costs rather than applying through the state. The Bedford program offers a $6,500 rebate for remediation costs, while the state PFAS rebate program offers $5,000. "Last week, the House Fiscal Committee approved a request from the Department of Environmental Services to use $2.4 million toward the programs." (New Hampshire Bulletin)
- The Bedford School District is now hiring for summer positions and for the 2023/24 school year. Both full- and part-time positions are available for paraprofessionals, food service, custodial staff, van drivers, tutors, and others. Training will be provided!
