5 Things: Black Ice, Cupcakes and Town Elections

Here's what's good in Bedford today.

1. Bedford Bulldogs take two titles, Bedford Patch takes six cupcakes. If the rest of the state wasn't already jealous of the Bedford High School athletics program – which seemingly plays for a championship in each sport, fall, winter and spring – there's certainly envy in the air now. BHS took home two championships in one day. In fact, the No. 3-ranked ice hockey team earned it's second-straight title with a 5-2 upset of top-seed Merrimack on Saturday afternoon (that means cupcakes for Bedford Patch editor Ryan O'Connor). Later that night, the BHS girls basketball team roared back from a sizable fourth-quarter deficit to defeat defending state-champ Bishop Guertin for this year's Divison crown. In between, however, the boys hoops squad fell at No. 1 Trinity, ending their impressive season in the second round of the D-I playoffs.

2. 3. Black ice warnings. The spring-like weather has been nice, but all the melting snow, combined with near-freezing overnight temperatures, has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a special weather statement for Bedford and surrounding areas, noting a high potential for black ice and slippey road conditions. Please, drive safe Bedford.

4. The weatherman says ... more spring weather is expected. According to Weather.com, today's forecasted high is 54 degrees with mostly cloudy skies and a 20-percent chance of rain.

5. On this day ... March 11, 1779, Congress establishes the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to help plan, design and prepare environmental and structural facilities for the U.S. Army. Made up of civilian workers, members of the Continental Army and French officers, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers played an essential role in the critical Revolutionary War battles at Bunker Hill, Saratoga and Yorktown.
