5 Things: Tragic Twist in Home Invasion Story

Here are 5 local tidbits to help get you through this January Tuesday.

1. Home Invasion Story Takes Turn for the Worse. Yesterday, Bedford Police discovered the body of Sonia Quesada, one of the victims of last November's reported home invasion, at the Bedford home of her husband's mother, Norma. Dr. Eduardo Quesada was discovered unconscious. Read more here.

2. Cardboard sled derby. The Bedford Recreation Department, this February vacation, encourages local children to have giant collect giant cardboard boxes to make a sled. It must be completely homemade and able to travel down the sledding hill by the Town Playground. Prizes will be awarded for fastest sled, longest traveling distance and best looking sled. Advanced registration is required by Feb. 18, and the derby will take place at the sledding hill on the town playground on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 10 a.m. Cost is $5 per sled.

3. Winter warmup? After a bitter cold week to begin the year, where Bedford residents saw high temperatures in the teens and 20s for several days, today's forecast calls for a partly cloudy day with a high of 42 degrees and a 20-percent chance of precipitation, according to Weather.com.

5. On the agenda. The Bedford School Board will be holding a public hearing on the FY2014 Preliminary Budget on Tuesday, January 8 @ 7:00 p.m. in the Bedford High School Theater.  The purpose of the hearing will be for Board members to present the FY2014 Preliminary Budget in detail, answer questions, and to listen to feedback from the community.  The school board began the FY2014 budget development process in November 2012. Since then,  they have met with each building administrative team and all program directors as well as the SAU Office Administration to review and discuss all aspects of funding the Bedford School District educational programs. At the conclusion of the hearing, the school board will convene in a meeting to establish the "bottom line" of the FY2014 Budget and to approve the School District warrant that will be presented to the community at the Deliberative Session on February 5 @ 7:00 p.m. in the BHS Theater as well. Three other official meetings are scheduled today in Bedford as well. First, the Special Cemetery Trustees Meeting meets at 8:30 a.m. at the Bedford Town Offices Meeting Room. At 5 p.m., the Bedford Village Common Development Committee holds a working meeting at the Bedford Public Library's McAllaster Room. Finally, the Historic District Commission meets at 7 p.m. at the BCTV Bedford Town Meeting Room.

Tomorrow, the first of two public hearings to review the proposed municipal budget will take place at 7 p.m. at the BCTV Bedford Town Meeting Room.
