Here are the top stories in Bedford today:
- A photo of A-List actor and Manchester, New Hampshire native Adam Sandler went viral over a jar of pickles. In the 8-year old photo, Sandler is walking down a New York City street wearing a long dark gray winter coat with a red scarf, eating a pickle. People think the photo is popular because Sandler remains humble, despite his celebrity and wealth. He is worth almost a half-billion dollars. (wokq.com)
- On Halloween, you will find pumpkins decorating windows and doorways, but have you ever wondered why we carve faces on pumpkins? The story can be traced back to early Ireland, where faces were carved out of candle-lit hollowed-out turnips. The centuries-old Irish tradition began with the tale of a mean-spirited blacksmith named Stingy Jack who, after tricking the devil, had to spend eternity roaming the earth with a burning coal that he carried in a hollowed-out turnip for light. People in Ireland started to place carved gourds with faces in windows and by doors to ward off evil spirits calling them "Jack's lantern" or "Jack-of-the-lantern," which eventually became "Jack-o'-lantern." Immigrants from Ireland and Scotland brought the popular tradition to America. National Geographic wrote that today, carved pumpkins have become more than a decoration and "now symbolize a welcoming sense of community." (Patch)
- New Hampshire and Vermont ski resorts will have an upgrade this year. The new owner, Vail Resorts, announced a $320 million capital plan to improve the guest experience. In a recent phone interview, Tim Baker, vice president and chief operating officer for the Eastern Region, said they are adding 19 new chairlifts across 14 resorts, including Attitash Mountain Resort. Vail acquired Peak Resorts in a multi-million dollar deal, taking over 17 ski areas in seven states, including Attitash, Wildcat, and Crotched Mountain in New Hampshire, as well as ski resorts in Vermont and New York. Baker said that one of the lessons the company learned during the pandemic was how to get more out of its existing equipment and how to be more effective at getting guests on a chairlift. "That means getting skiers up the mountain faster," Baker said. (The Union Leader)
