Bear Wanders Into Manchester, Creating An Up Close View Of Wildlife

The yearling walked the city streets and climbed a tree on Beech Street Saturday. After dark, it came down for a snack and wandered off.

MANCHESTER, NH — On Saturday morning, a bear was spotted on Beech Street between Bridge and Lowell streets. The bear, which sources indicate was most likely a “yearling,” between 1 and 2 years old, wandered into the yard of a house and climbed a tree.

Throughout the day, the bear appeared to be docile and sleeping most of the time, but occasionally, it lifted its head to check out a few people looking up into the tree. New Hampshire Fish and Game was contacted but advised that the bear would most likely come down on its own as the sun came down.

At about 9 p.m., as predicted, the bear climbed down the tree, gathered a peanut butter sandwich someone had left, and wandered north in the alley. Later in the evening, the bear was spotted outside the Ash Street Inn. Click Link

A yearling bear is a young bear recently independent from its mother. Yearling bears usually weigh between 50 to 150 pounds. They have long legs, big ears, and little belly fat, making their legs look long in proportion to their body. Yearling bears are born in January or February and stay with their mothers for about one and a half years.

In June or July, mother bears typically "kick their cubs loose" so they can mate again. Yearlings then leave the family unit to find their home range, where they learn new habits and venture out for new food sources.

Although yearlings often shed in mid-summer, which can make them look unhealthy, they are usually healthy and well-equipped to survive on their own
