Bedford Candidates Wanted For PFAS Contamination Panel
Residents are encouraged to apply for the state commission to study effects of PFAS contamination in Bedford, Merrimack and Litchfield.
BEDFORD, NH — The Town Council is seeking residents interested in representing Bedford on the state panel that will study the health impacts of perfluorinated chemicals (PFAS) discovered in local groundwater, air and soil in recent years. The panel will study the effects of the chemicals' release in Bedford, Merrimack and Litchfield. Elevated levels of the chemical has also been discovered in Portsmouth.
According to Boston University, exposure to elevated levels of the PFAS has probable links to testicular and kidney cancer, thyroid disease, high cholesterol, ulcerative colitis, and pregnancy-induced hypertension.
The state's Commission on the Environmental and Public Health Impacts of Perfluorinated Chemicals was created this year and will run until 2024, according to Bedford town officials. It will study both health and environmental impacts of the chemicals' release.
