- Morgan Stickney won at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, and the excitement over her win is still settling in. The 24-year-old swimmer from Bedford, New Hampshire, won gold in the women’s 400-meter freestyle at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. Not letting physical challenges hold her back, Stickney's next dream is to break the world record in Paris in 2024.
- The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services is struggling to keep an accurate count of COVID-19 cases in schools. Dozens of cases are missing from the state dashboard, including in school districts with substantial clusters. The state dashboard shows that Bedford has four positive cases, but the district's dashboard shows 28. Officials said discrepancies are common, and that health officials will only follow up when there is a cluster (three or more cases in a building). In a press conference, Gov. Chris Sununu and Department of Health and Human Services Commissioner Lori Shibinette said they are "absolutely tracking" clusters they know about, but acknowledged that many cases will not be investigated. (NPR)
- Craig Drobek of Bedford was one of the hardy trail runners with 'happy attitudes' that braved the challenging Megunticook 50 and Wicked Tough 10 races at Camden Hills State Park in Maine. The races took runners over rugged terrain on rain-toughened mountains at high elevations. Race creator, David Hirschfeld, said that trail conditions were challenging, and he "was stunned" by the reaction of the runners and that people braved the water and mud with such happy attitudes. (Courier-Gazette & Camden Herald)
- Space Force supported the Inspiration4 mission that rocketed an all-civilian crew of private citizens into space. A cancer survivor, a record-setting pilot, a doctor from New Hampshire, and a U.S. Air Force veteran were all on the history-making SpaceX journey. Bedford native Nicholas Francoeur, a 1st ROPS range operations commander, said that this historic launch showed that they can assemble a team of "qualified operators" at a moment's notice to 'Launch on Demand'.
