Here are the top stories today in Bedford:

  1. Conceptual plans for the proposed Police and Fire Safety Complex at 300 River Road were reviewed by the Bedford Planning Board at its regular meeting in July. The proposed safety complex is to meet the "immediate safety needs" of the town, which has doubled in population. Doubled! The new 44,000-square-foot, single story complex will house the entire Police Department and have a new substation for the Fire Department. Lori Radke, vice chairwoman of the Council said she supports the complex, noting, “It also relieves pressure at the Safety Complex and Town Office." See the conceptual plans here: (Bedford Patch)
  2. The new REI store plans to open its Bedford location in October, and a proposed 55 and over housing building is under review by the Bedford Planning Board. After the Planning Board rejected the initial proposal saying the building was too large, Texas developer Munson and Associates reduced the number of one- and two-bedroom units in the 5-story condominium complex from 65 to 62 and eliminated a rooftop garden "in favor of a balcony roof deck on the fifth floor." 3. It's not too early to order fall mums from the Bedford Garden Club! The annual Mum Sale is underway, and you will find discounted prices for "beautiful 9-inch potted mums" if you order and pay by Aug. 7. Buy three or more for $8.33 each (or 3 for $25). Regularly priced mums when also be available for $9 each if you order and pay by Aug. 26. The Mum Sale "helps support the club's educational programs and maintain its 10 community gardens for the benefit of residents and visitors." 4. The "Dog Daze of Summer" Animal Rescue League event at Great North Aleworks has been postponed until Sunday, July 30 from 1-4 p.m. "due to inclement weather." "Stay dry on Saturday and we'll see you on Sunday afternoon!" Find out more here: (Animal Rescue League of NH via Facebook)
