Here are the top stories today in Bedford:

  1. The Bedford Bulldogs hit their stride on Thursday night when they won over Central 34-0. Quarterback Joe Mikol threw three touchdown passes, including two to Andrew Grudinskas. Central's Little Green returned to the game after not playing since September 10, after team member's tested positive for COVID-19. (The Union Leader)
  2. Did you know that the small woodland animals you see around Bedford, like chipmunks, mice, voles, and shrews, have a big impact on the recovery of New Hampshire's forests? A University of New Hampshire study wanted to find out the role of small animals after a timber harvest. Ryan Stephens, the lead researcher of the study, said the study found that small woodland animals help maintain the health of New Hampshire’s forests by eating fungi, like mushrooms and truffles, and then "depositing" fungi spores through their scat that helps new trees trying to grow. Stephens said that the woodland animals help foster the special fungi that help trees thrive. The fungi play an important role. They help trees "take in water and nutrients," and support trees in becoming "resilient to stresses like drought," Stephens said. (NHPR)
  3. A wave of fall foliage color is spreading across the state, according to New Hampshire tourism officials. They report that in Northern New Hampshire, 80 percent of the leaves have changed color. The Visit NH website announced, “Leaf peepers get ready … because the foliage is gearing up to peak any moment in The Great North Woods.” The tourism officials added that in the The White Mountains, 40 percent of the leaves have changed color. “For now, you can spot some amazingly stunning color in and around Bretton Woods or Franconia Notch,” they wrote.
