We caught up with Bedford's Animal Control Officer Steven Paul for a quick question-and-answer interview on the animal control challenges handled by the Bedford Police Department. This came after a small alligator was captured last week in Rockingham County.
Paul, who has worked seven years as ACO in Bedford, has never captured a gator ... but he's got the training to, if ever necessary.
The animal control calls he goes on include coyotes, fox, deer, bears – the occasional loose horse. And dogs, of course, per the state's licensing law. (There are an estimated 3,500 to 3,600 dogs in Bedford.) He responds to more wildlife calls than he did seven years ago.
"It's never a boring job," he says.
