Here are the top stories today in Bedford:

  1. The Bedford Fire Department Assisted In A Deadly Blaze: The Bedford Fire Department was one of 11 fire departments that helped Manchester firefighters battle a three-alarm fire that broke out in a six-unit multi-family building on Dutton Street in Manchester on Saturday around 6 p.m. Flames could be seen leaping into the sky as firefighters from Allenstown, Auburn, Bedford, Concord, Derry, Hudson, Hooksett, Litchfield, Londonderry, Merrimack, and Nashua arrived to assist Manchester firefighters as they battled the multi-alarm blaze. One person died, and a heroic Manchester firefighter, Capt. Steve DesRuisseaux, was injured when he became engulfed in a flash of flames while rescuing a man from the second floor. He is now recovering in a Boston hospital. Investigators with arson dogs were on the scene Sunday trying to determine what caused the fire. (The Union Leader)
  2. A Great Run: You may have seen orange cones blocking roads in Manchester early Sunday morning. More than 1,600 runners from Manchester and Bedford, and as far away as Cape Cod and Nanuet, New York, ran a challenging marathon up hills and by scenic parks and a rail trail. There was also a half-marathon and running relays, according to Barry Lewandowski, director of marketing for Millennium Running. Marathon runners were happy to participate in a "mass start" this year, where everyone could experience the energy and excitement of starting the race together. Last year, there were only trial starts because of the COVID-19 pandemic. “It’s a different vibe when you are all together and with the energy of everyone starting together,” said local runner, Beth Connolly, 39, who has completed 72 marathons. She ran on Sunday, crossing the finish line in 3 hours, 43 minutes, and 44 seconds. Congratulations, Beth! (The Union Leader)
  3. Starting Monday, the U.S. is lifting travel restrictions to Canada, and New Hampshire couldn't be happier. Travel has been restricted between Canada and New Hampshire during the years-long pandemic. Friends and family have missed life events, like weddings and birthdays, and even cross-border hockey rivalries that have been part of community traditions and celebrations, were upended by the pandemic. The change is expected to have a profound effect on the borders with Mexico and Canada, where traveling back and forth was a way of life until COVID-19 forced the U.S. to stop all nonessential travel. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. will accept travelers who have been fully vaccinated with any of the vaccines approved for emergency use by the World Health Organization, not just those in use in the U.S. You can read more here: (NHPR)
