Here are the top stories today in Bedford:
- Congratulations to SHNU student Jeffrey Scroggins of Bedford who has been named on the 2021 Dean’s List. Eligibility for the Dean’s List requires that a student have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher. Manchester's Southern New Hampshire University has been recognized as the “Most Innovative” regional university according to U.S. News & World Report. (Smith Mountain Eagle)
- It hits home. Many New Hampshire families and communities lived through the opioid crisis. On Tuesday, New Hampshire's attorney general, John M. Formella, announced that New Hampshire has opted-in to a $21 billion settlement with the nation's largest drug distributors. Local communities, including Bedford, will be part of the multi-billion dollar settlement that will be paid over the next 18 years towards addiction treatment and opioid impact on communities. New Hampshire was one of six states that did not originally join the opioid settlement. (The Union Leader)
- We can all be proud of Memorial School in Bedford. The New Hampshire Department of Education announced that Memorial Elementary School was one of two New Hampshire schools that were recognized as 2021 National Blue Ribbon Schools. The coveted list recognizes schools with exemplary academic achievement. New Hampshire Commissioner of Education Frank Edelblut praised the students and teachers of Bedford Memorial Elementary School and the Grantham Village School in Grantham, for academic accomplishment throughout the year, despite the pandemic. - Would you vote to legalize marijuana in New Hampshire? Some New Hampshire lawmakers are pushing for a constitutional amendment to settle the question at the ballot box in New Hampshire to break a years-long impasse. Democratic House Minority Leader Renny Cushing said that a number of legislators would feel more comfortable letting the people decide, while Rep. Hershel Nunez, R-Pelham, said that giving the people a choice "could break the stalemate." (WMUR)
