Driver Who Hit Bedford Toll Accused Of DUI And Reckless Operation

Jane Powell, 39, of Nashua, was transported with non-life-threatening injuries after crashing into the tollbooth's concrete barrier Friday.

BEDFORD, NH — Bedford and Merrimack Fire and New Hampshire State Police are investigating a vehicle that crashed into the southbound toll plaza in Bedford.

Multiple 911 calls came in Friday, just after 5 p.m., for a vehicle that had crashed into the toll plaza; dispatch reported that one caller said the vehicle was “obliterated.” State police arrived at the scene and reported that the occupant was out of the vehicle, conscious, breathing, and alert.

Bedford Fire reported they could handle the incident and canceled Merrimack Fire. At this time, only one person was injured and transported to a local hospital.

According to state police, the initial investigation determined a Ford Ranger was traveling south when it crossed a concrete divider and struck the concrete enclosure of a tollbooth.

The driver, identified as Jane Powell, 39, of Nashua, was able to exit the vehicle and was later taken to Elliot Hospital with minor injuries. Powell was arrested later on driving under the influence and reckless conduct charges.

Due to the crash, two E-ZPass lanes were closed for the investigation. Bailey Towing dispatched two wreckers to the scene, removed the pickup truck, and transported it on a flatbed from the scene.

The lanes were closed for about 90 minutes, and the E-ZPass lanes will require servicing. No workers at the toll plaza were injured in the incident.
