Here are the top stories in Bedford today:

  1. Did you hear a loud noise or feel the ground shake on Sunday? You're not alone. Experts are baffled at what caused the mysterious loud bang and shaking. At first, observers thought that a small earthquake rattled southern New Hampshire, but scientists now believe that the loud boom was likely caused by a meteor entering the atmosphere. One person reported that they "felt about 10 seconds of shaking" around 11:30 a.m. Others said they "heard a huge bang" and their house shook. Reports of the disturbance came into WMUR from more than 40 towns including Rindge, New Boston, Hillsboro, Greenfield, Goffstown, Peterborough, Chichester, Nashua, and as far as Maine. Paul Caruso, a geophysicist at the USGS National Earthquake Center in Golden, Colorado told WMUR that the seismographs for the New Hampshire Sunday mornings said that he "did not see anything that looked like an earthquake." (WMUR)
  2. Let's be kind, everyone. A TikTok social media challenge in Oct. encouraged students to 'Slap a Teacher' and has educators in N.H. and around the country worried. Schools throughout the state are notifying teachers, parents, and students of the serious consequences that students may face if they commit assault. NEA-NH President Megan Tuttle noted that the recent lack of respect, chaos, and threats of violence when there should be civil discourse at school board meetings across New Hampshire is "setting a dangerous precedent." A TikTok challenge in September encouraged students from elementary to high school to film themselves committing acts of vandalism, including everything from dumping soap dispensers (and filling them excrement) to ripping stalls and urinals off walls. Tuttle noted that threatening and engaging in physical harm "is not a joke" and said that schools will have a "zero-tolerance policy." Many devoted education professionals are "making the hard decision to leave the work we love" because of disrespect and lack of support, she said. (Union Leader)
  3. Americans are making up for lost time and U.S. travel is booming, but since the pandemic, travel trends have changed: more people are choosing to travel locally. Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel, said that the rollout of vaccinations has made a big difference and domestic airline bookings are approaching pre-pandemic levels. Reflecting the new travel trend, the Burglewski family decided to vacation in Nashville, Indiana this year. Burglewskisaid that most family members wore masks inside and spent a lot of time participating in outdoor activities. They chose a rental home with a porch to gather on rather than staying at a large hotel. Overall, travelers are showing less interest in hotels and international or urban destinations and are actively traveling to rural places, like New Hampshire, that have outdoor activities and private vacation rentals. (NHPR)
  4. Drive carefully. On Monday, a car rolled over in a single-car accident off of Exit 13 in Bedford on the Southbound off-ramp of the Everett Turnpike. New Hampshire State Police responded to the accident. When firefighters arrived at about 1:40 p.m., they found a vehicle on its roof with a person trapped underneath. The man was taken to the Elliott hospital with unknown injuries. He did not appear to be wearing a seat belt. (Patch)
