- In a recent New Hampshire Journal podcast, Georgia's Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan, a former pro baseball player who is now a legislator, talked about his newly released book, "GOP 2.0" and the lessons Republicans can learn from former President Donald Trump, "both good and bad," that can help win future elections. - Monarch butterflies are in decline, but you can help. New Hampshire Fish & Game and the UNH Cooperative Extension are asking New Hampshire residents to collect milkweed pods from Sept. 15 - Oct. 30, 2021. They said the best time to collect them is after they are dry and have turned grey or brown, and the center seam pops with only gentle pressure, but it's important to leave 25 percent on the plant. Experts say to wear gloves, as the plants are known to be toxic and are toxic to animals. Be sure not to touch your face or eyes with the gloves and carefully wash your hands. The UNH Cooperative Extension website said that pods can be stored in a paper bag (not plastic), labeled, and brought in to a UNH Extension site. The closest location to Bedford is Goffstown. The seeds will be planted in conservation corridors along highways. They wrote, the disappearance of milkweed across the U.S. has contributed to "an 80 percent decline in the eastern Monarch butterfly population over the last 20 years." State and federal agencies, conservation organizations, and others are diligently working to prevent their extinction. Individuals can help. - Slow down, move over. New Hampshire State Police joined the New Hampshire DOT, the Bedford Fire Department, and the New Hampshire Towing Association Saturday to bring attention to a law adopted in 2004 requiring drivers to "move over a lane or slow down" when approaching or passing "an emergency situation" on any road. First responders say the law helps save lives. Bedford fire lieutenant Dave Sherwood said that his department is often called for accidents on the Everett Turnpike and "it's dangerous." Adding, if drivers would move over and slow down it would make their jobs easier and safer. Eileen Meaney, of the New Hampshire DOT, said that drivers run into plow trucks in the winter. Officials used National Move Over Day to also remind drivers to put down cell phones and any other distractions to help keep us all safe. (WMUR Manchester)
- Unexpected crash at a local ice cream restaurant: On Sunday at 12:40 p.m, a car crashed into Blakes Ice Cream Restaurant in Manchester, apparently hoping the curb, driving through a fence, and crashing into the lobby. Customers in the restaurant at the time of the accident were startled, and one man had to jump out of the way. The female driver and customers inside the restaurant were not injured. A man exiting the restaurant at the time of the accident had minor scrapes and bruises. MFD Battalion Chief Robert Beaudet said that damage to the restaurant was extensive, "particularly the entryway." The restaurant will be closed until repairs can be made. (Patch)
