Here are the top stories in Bedford today:

  1. Graupel fell from the sky in Manchester and other places in New Hampshire on Wednesday. If you are wondering what graupel is, WMUR meteorologist Hayley LaPoint wrote that graupel, also known as soft hail, are soft, small pellets of ice created when "supercooled water droplets" coat a snowflake and fall to the ground. According to LaPoint, graupel is different from hail, which forms inside thunderstorms "and is more of a solid piece of ice." On Wednesday, a video captured graupel falling outside the WMUR studios in Manchester, and a WMUR "U local user," Lisa Bechok, spotted the soft snow pellets in New London. It's a sure sign that winter, with all of the beauty it brings, will be here soon. (WMUR)
  2. Science on Tap, a free adult science discussion series, returns to Manchester — in person! The SEE Science Center’s Science on Tap program will be on Nov. 9 at the Stark Brewing Company in Bo’s Lounge and function room on 500 Commercial St. in Manchester. Science on Tap hosts informal discussions with local scientists and experts about different topics. The speakers for Tuesday's event include Research Scientist Bryan Spencer, Ph.D. MPH; Doug Vincent, founder and president of Ventriflo; Karalyn Malaby, MT(ASCP)CM, technical supervisor-hematology at the Elliot Hospital; and Alice Cashin, MT(ASCP)CM, Blood Bank supervisor quality coordinator at the Elliot Hospital. The science and health experts will discuss new researcher about blood composition, how life-saving transfusions and other treatments have evolved, and the impact of donating blood. Science on Tap is held on the second Tuesday of the month through June. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the discussion begins at 6 p.m. Admission is free, but advanced sign-up is recommended due to limited capacity. Attendees can order from the food and beverage menu during the event. (Concord Monitor)
  3. Bedford wins high school playoff game against Exeter: The playoffs will give high school quarterbacks "a stage to shine," wrote Roger Brown in his recent State of Sports column in The Union Leader. How did the Bulldogs pull off the win? Brown said Exeter was trailing Bedford 12-0 at halftime, when the Blue Hawks made a quarterback change, going with junior Evan Pafford. Brown wrote that Pafford led Exeter on "two second-half touchdown drives" in what may have been a comeback until Exeter fumbled the ball attempting to run out the clock. Brown noted, with 3.5 seconds to play, Bedford won a 15-13 victory with a field goal. Pafford and third-seeded Exeter will have another chance to play against second-seeded Bedford when the teams meet again in Saturday’s Division I quarterfinals in Bedford.
