Here are the top stories in Bedford today:
- A hero's welcome! Injured Manchester Fire Capt. Steve DesRuisseaux was escorted home after spending almost a month in a Boston hospital. At the New Hampshire border on Interstate 93, New Hampshire State Troopers, Manchester Police, and Londonderry Police escorted DesRuisseaux to his home in Manchester. DesRuisseaux was burned in an unexpected fireflash on Nov. 6 after getting caught on a ladder and being engulfed in flames attempting to rescue several people trapped on the upper floors of a three-story building in Manchester. DesRuisseaux was flown to Massachusetts General Hospital and was treated for burns on over 40 percent of his body. Firefighter Josh Charpentier pushed the ladder to the ground saving Lt. DesRuisseaux's life. (Patch)
- Officials say an illegal bypass pipe at Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics continues to release "forever" chemicals into the environment. In a news conference with bipartisan local leaders, former state representative and environmental scientist Mindi Messmer said an EPA notice of deficiency last week stated that Saint-Gobain installed an illegal bypass, adding that it was another attempt to make money while continuing to release toxic chemicals in Merrimack. The controversy began six years earlier when PFOA chemicals from the embattled plant contaminated groundwater causing the closing of wells in Merrimack, Bedford, and Litchfield following years of emissions. Experts say that PFAS and PFOA compounds are called “forever" chemicals because they never break down in the environment and can cause irreversible contamination of soil, tap water, and groundwater. PFAS compounds have been linked to certain types of cancer, a weakened immune system, and other serious health problems. Leaders are calling for fines and asking the DES to close the plant to stop contamination. You can read more here: (WMUR)
