Here are the top stories today in Bedford:
- “School Choice” was a losing issue for Republicans in the recent Bedford special election. After 18 months of disruption from COVID-19, support for vouchers and charter schools plummeted in the “Live Free or Die” state. Catherine Rombeau, a former school board member, made public education and how to pay for it the central issue of her campaign. Like other residents, Rombeau moved to Bedford for its strong education system. Defunding local schools for “education freedom” held little appeal for Bedford voters. (The Nation)
- Pro Hockey player Alex Steeves of Bedford recently signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs and may be their next star player. Steeves was born in Bedford after his parents moved from Canada. Haley Wickenheiser, the Hockey Hall of Famer with four Olympic gold medals, ran the Leafs’ five-day development camp and worked with Steeves one on one. “To me, he looks like a pro player on the ice,” Wickenheiser said. (Toronto Star)
- The New Hampshire Fisher Cats canceled Tuesday's game — the ninth in a row because of COVID-19 concerns. Fisher Cat officials said the team will be ready to play the final games on Wednesday through Sunday. The team said Tuesday's game cancellation was to allow for an additional day of precautionary testing and contact tracing. (WMUR)
