Here are the top stories today in Bedford:
- Holiday Parade This Saturday: The Manchester holiday parade returns to Elm Street this Saturday, Dec. 4, at 4 p.m., after it was canceled last year due to the pandemic. You will see twinkling lights, decorated floats, marching bands, and an appearance by St. Nick. Other participants joining in the fun include the Palace Theatre, the Manchester Fire Department, the Manchester Police Department, UNH Manchester, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, and the Manchester Transit Authority. If you arrive an hour early, you can cheer on runners in the Santa Claus Shuffle road race, presented by Millennium Running. This spirited race down Elm Street starts at 3 p.m., just before the parade. Santa Claus Shuffle runners will be wearing red Santa hats. John Clayton and Peter White will emcee the parade from Veteran’s Park in downtown Manchester. Ho. Ho. Go! (The Union Leader)
- Tap Water Will Be Treated: Manchester Water Works announced they will be treating the water supply with chlorine beginning Tuesday, Dec. 7, through March 31, 2022, to address higher nitrate levels, which means higher levels of bacteria. Water Works Director Phil Croasdale said water quality was trending in the wrong direction over the past few months but was still within EPA limits. Croasdale said the water is safe but Manchester Water Works will add chlorine to disinfect the water "as a proactive approach." Homes and businesses along River Road and other places in Bedford are part of the Manchester water supply, as are parts of Auburn, Derry, Goffstown, Hooksett, and Londonderry. Individuals and businesses who already remove chloramine (that was previously used) from tap water, should continue to "take the same precautions" during the temporary switch to chlorine, Croasdale said. Water Works officials said to help remove the taste and odor, run the tap for five to 10 minutes when the water hasn't been used and to refrigerate cold tap water in an open pitcher for a few hours.
