Here are the top stories today in Bedford:
- Hikers: Prepare for icy conditions. A woman hiker was rescued on Mount Monadnock in Goffstown Sunday morning after encountering icy conditions around 10:30 a.m. Rescuers said that the woman, identified as Tina Sharby, 57, of Goffstown fell on the Pumpelly Trail and was taken to Monadnock Community Hospital. Conservation officers received another call just before 1 p.m. to rescue hiker Frederick Demarco, 53, of North Attleboro, Massachusetts, who made it to the peak, but then fell, seriously injuring his lower leg. When a rescue helicopter was unable to fly to help him, good Samaritans and rescue team members climbed to the summit. While rescue crews descended the mountain with Demarco, another hiker, Kateri Demartino, 43, of Gardner, Massachusetts, fell coming down a trail not far from where crews were carrying the injured man. The rescue crew assisted her down the mountain. The three injured hikers were transported by ambulance to nearby hospitals for treatment. New Hampshire Fish and Game reminded hikers to prepare for winter-like conditions this time of year and to "wear proper footwear." (The Union Leader)
- Brides In Crisis: Brides-to-be and wedding parties are experiencing long delays for bridal and wedding party dresses, suits, and other items due to pandemic-related supply chain shipping delays. The disruption is coming at a time when weddings are at a 40-year high. The Wedding Report estimated there will be 2.5 million weddings in 2022 — a number that hasn't been seen in the United States since 1984. Everyone seems to be in a celebratory mood and taking things in stride — until the wedding date draws near. Brides are booking venues including The Bedford Village Inn and the LaBelle Winery in Amherst, 12 months or more in advance, and are ordering early from shops, like The Modern Bride and Formal in Bedford, in person and online. The secret to success, especially with COVID-19 restrictions and extended shipping delays, is to order early and plan ahead.
(The Union Leader) - $1 Trillion "Not Nearly Enough." Historians, economists, and engineers interviewed by The Associated Press said that President Joe Biden's efforts, and the new bipartisan funding bill, are a step in the right direction, but warned that $1 trillion was "not nearly enough" to overcome the government’s decades-long failure to invest in antiquated infrastructure across the country. Biden remained optimistic, visiting one of the state's most dangerous "red-listed" bridges on Tuesday. The politics of the new bill also forced a trade-off on other critical issues facing the United States, including the burgeoning climate crisis and investment needed for the United States to compete as a world economic power. Biden was confident that both parties can continue to find common ground and work together for the good of the country. The $1T infrastructure bill passed with bipartisan support.
