- Be sure to check your freezer! A frozen lobster recall has been issued due to possible Listeria contamination. A Maine lobster company has issued a recall for Greenhead Lobster products after the FDA said that they could be contaminated with Listeria. According to the FDA, Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. The affected lobster meat was distributed in Maine and New Hampshire, and sent nationwide through wholesale distributors. (WBZNewsRadio)
- Polluted sewage: Millions of gallons of sewage overflows into the Merrimack River from the Manchester sewer system. The city's sewer system pours about 280 million gallons of combined sewage, including industrial waste, nitrogen, phosphorous, polluted stormwater, and raw sewage, into the Merrimack River watershed annually, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The Merrimack River winds through Bedford, and is a source of drinking water for over 700,000 people in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. A $55 million bond, passed on Tuesday to help pay for needed updates to the city's sewer system. The plan will reduce the city’s overflow discharge by 74 percent. Fred McNeill, chief engineer with the city’s environmental protection division, said that this is the first time funds have been allocated for a 20-year project to help reduce the sewage discharge. Manchester agreed they would address sewer system problems last year after a settlement with the EPA, the Department of Justice, and the State of New Hampshire. (New Hampshire Public Radio)
