Manchester Firefighters Battle 2-Alarm Brush Fire In Extreme Heat

Crews contained the brush fire to about 4 acres near Upland Street on the west side of Manchester. Several abandoned homeless camps burned.

MANCHESTER, NH — Manchester Fire received reports of heavy smoke on the west side on Thursday night.

Some callers reported smoke on Goffstown Road and others on Upland Street at about 6:30 p.m.

Firefighters located a large brush fire quickly spreading in a wooded area near the end of Upland Street near the Goffstown town line. They worked to run hoses into the woods and began to set up the water supply. Additional resources, including engines and forestry units, eventually went to a second-alarm fire, bringing more resources for manpower.

Firefighters battled the fire burning in very hot and dry conditions while working in extreme heat and humidity. Crews were rotated out of the woods to hydrate and cool down.

As of 9:50 p.m., several crews remain at the scene chasing “hot spots” and extinguishing the remaining fire.

Battalion Chief Robert Plantier estimates about 4 acres burned. The wooded area where the fire burned had the remnants of several abandoned homeless camps. It did not appear any of the camps were currently occupied at the time of the fire.

Firefighters from several departments responded mutual aid to cover the Manchester fire stations.

Manchester Fire Marshal’s Office will investigate the cause and origin of the fire.
