Market Basket Offering Year-Long Discount

The 4 percent discount on all items is seen as the latest salvo in the New Hampshire supermarket wars.

The supermarket wars are heating up again in New Hampshire, with Market Basket offering a 4 percent discount to customers on almost all items for 2014, according to New Hampshire Business Review.

The discount, which runs through Dec. 27, was announced in Market Basket's weekly flier. It does not cover beer, wine, cigarettes, milk, local trash bags, lottery tickets, stamps or gift cards. Market Basket has 28 New Hampshire stores, including one at 5 Garden Lane in Londonderry.

The Market Basket discount comes several months after Shaw's decided to scrap its rewards card program in favor of lower prices across the store.

Both Shaw's and Stop & Shop were forced to close New Hampshire stores last year after they failed to meet expectations. And Hannaford recently announced that it will open a new store at the former Exeter Stop & Shop and that it has acquired the lease to the old Bedford Stop & Shop.
