Here are the top stories today in Bedford:
- Music Therapy: Researchers from Dartmouth New Hampshire wondered if certain types of music can have a therapeutic effect on epilepsy. Dr. Barbara Jobst, director of the Epilepsy and Cognition Lab at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, said she was initially skeptical but was curious to see the results of the study. Jobst and the other researchers monitored the brain activity of 16 patients with epilepsy and found that seizure activity was reduced when music by Mozart was played for at least 90 seconds. The researchers aren't exactly sure why Mozart’s Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major lessened abnormal epileptic activity in the brain, but they were encouraged by the results. Jobst cautioned not to rush to the conclusion that all music by Mozart is therapeutic, and stressed that more research is needed. Still, the research is promising. (NHPR)
- The $25 million Millyard grant is a "big deal for the city." Manchester officials said the city was awarded a $25 million Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant to transform the South Millyard area. This is good news for Bedford college students and educators that travel to Southern New Hampshire University in the South Millyard. Plans to improve the area include: new pedestrian paths, adding a pedestrian walkway over Granite Street, new bike lanes, and improving the flow of traffic in the congested area between Granite Street and Queen City Avenue. The total investment of $30 million includes a $5 million matching donation. This is the third time the city applied for the grant. This grant is the most money the program has awarded to any city in the United States. In a recent statement Manchester Mayor Joyce Craig said, "This is a big deal for the city of Manchester." - New Hampshire Extreme Air performers are "super excited" to perform in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. If you planned to watch the parade this year with friends and family in Bedford, you may catch a glimpse of Extreme Air, the only jump rope team representing New Hampshire 8-18 year olds in the national USA Jump Rope circuit. The four team members performing in the New York City parade are Malia Everett, 18, of Exeter; Eilis McKenna, 14, of Newmarket; Katelyn O'Neill, 15, of Londonderry; and Margaux Freer, 15, of Portsmouth. Team members O'Neill and Everett performed a "Fire Hands" routine, switching ropes mid-swing, at a recent practice on Thursday. Look for Extreme Air in the 2021 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
