Here are the top stories today in Bedford:

  1. Local peaches will be hard to find at Bedford Farm stands and markets this summer. The May 19 freeze came just as tender peach blossoms emerged. Ken Merrill, who has an 11-acre fruit tree farm in Londonderry, said he "lost all of his peaches and most of his cherries, pears, and plums," and "found just one peach blossom among his 100 peach trees." Merrill is the fourth-generation steward of a family farm that has been in his family since the 1700s. Shawn Jasper, New Hampshire’s commissioner of agriculture, markets, and food, said the unusually mild fall and winter before the -20 below zero February deep freeze was partly to blame, as fruit trees "weren’t hardened for it." Local farmers will have to wait until next year for their trees to bear fruit. (Subscription/The Union Leader)
  2. Have you seen these women? The Bedford Police Department is asking for help identifying two female suspects allegedly involved in a theft from the NH Liquor Store on May 29. "Anyone with information is encouraged to reach out to Officer Michael Loud:" (Bedford NH Police Department via Facebook)
  3. Lieutenant Adam Parent has been promoted to Captain of the Bedford Fire Department! Captain Parent began his career with the BFD as a firefighter and has been with the department since 2016. Congratulations, Captain Parent! (Bedford Fire Department, NH via Facebook)
  4. The Bedford Fire Department said farewell to Captain Ben Selleck. The BFD said knew they had to say goodbye for Captian Selleck to further his career and wished him well in his new role as Deputy Chief of Goffstown Fire. Captain Selleck served Bedford for 17 years, most recently as the Captain of Training & EMS. He started his new position on Monday. Congratulations! (Bedford Fire Department, NH via Facebook)
