Here are the top stories today in Bedford:
- If you see signs of Oak Wilt disease in New Hampshire, report it immediately to New Hampshire Forestry officials. An outbreak of the new, quickly spreading fungus has quickly killed oak trees in recent outbreaks in Albany and Long Island, New York, and may be on the verge of attacking New Hampshire trees, officials warn. Red oaks, which have pointy leaves instead of the rounded leaves of white oaks, die quickly after being infected. The life-giving fluids cannot flow through diseased trees, and they quickly die of dehydration, officials said, adding, "The disease is spread over long distances through the transportation of infected logs and firewood." Report diseased red oak trees to the NH Division of Forests and Lands’ Forest Health Program: (NH Department of Natural Cultural Resources)
- Register for Wildlife Encounters at the Bedford Public Library! Children ages 3-12 can meet and learn about a variety of wild animals in the McAllaster Room. All that is needed to sign up is a Bedford Library card. Two sessions will be offered; the first session will be on Monday, July 17, at 11 a.m. and the second session will be at 1 p.m. Wildlife experts will be on hand to answer all of your questions! Find out more and register here: (Please register for only one session). (Bedford (NH) Public Library via Facebook)
- Medicaid coverage for new moms will soon be extended to a full year thanks to a provision in the newly signed state budget. Doctors are praising the decision. Under current state Medicaid rules, postpartum coverage only lasted only 60 days. "'Dr. Danielle Albushies, an OB-GYN in Bedford, said complications can arise months after pregnancy," adding, “When women lose their insurance at that 60-day mark, there is just a huge unsafe gap in the health care for those women where we can be making a difference.'" (New Hampshire Public Radio)
