Here are the top stories today in Bedford:
- A stealth British fighter jet, with components made in New Hampshire, crashed Wednesday in the Mediterranean Sea. UK submarines and divers are racing against time, and the Russians, to recover the £100 million F-35 jet that has "top-secret" stealth technology. The pilot successfully ejected before the crash and returned to the HMS Queen Elizabeth, according to a spokesperson for the defense ministry. News reports suggest that divers and mini-submarines are urgently searching for the jet at an undisclosed location. Extremely sensitive radar on the F-35 allows it to fly "unseen" in hostile territory— something Russia would find valuable. Engineers and scientists from New Hampshire helped create components of the stealth jet. (The Union Leader)
- Keep bird feeders inside until Dec. 1st. New Hampshire Fish and Game officials say that bears in New Hampshire haven't hibernated for the winter yet due to the unusually warm fall weather. Bears are highly intelligent animals and are searching for the food they need to prepare for winter. New Hampshire Fish and Game biologist Andrew Timmins, who handles complaints about bears, said that bears have learned how to "lift handles" to open unlocked car doors looking for food, and will sometimes smash car windows looking for food with their sensitive noses, but they "are not trying to be destructive," he said. Timmins noted that people are not modifying their behavior to peacefully coexist with bears. When humans interact with bears, he added, "it usually ends badly for the bear." State officials are reminding New Hampshire residents to keep bird feeders inside until Dec. 1 and not to leave food in cars. (The Union Leader)
