Here are the top stories today in Bedford:

  1. Race still on to find top-secret stealth jet: The United Kingdom's royal navy is in a race against Russia to locate a British top-secret F-35 fighter jet, with important components that were made in New Hampshire, that crashed in an undisclosed location in the Mediterranean Sea. Britain's Ministry of Defense said that the pilot safely ejected from the £100 million jet, and returned to the HMS Queen Elizabeth ship. The F-35 is an"invisible" jet with the capability to fly undetected. The stealth jet can also perform high-level intelligence gathering and reconnaissance missions, according to New Hampshire defense contractor Lockheed Martin. Bedford residents who worked on developing top-secret components for the fighter jet may be wondering how this will all turn out. (The Union Leader)
  2. Gun decision: In 13 states including New Hampshire, it's up to the judge if a person under a temporary order of protection is allowed to keep guns. In a Nov. 2021 article published in The Trace, they wanted to understand how those decisions are made. They discovered in the states of Michigan, Arizona, New Hampshire, and South Dakota, that firearm restrictions were seldom tied to a protection order even if the victim was threatened with a gun. In one New Hampshire case, a man sent a woman a photo of a gun with bullets with a note saying he wanted people dead, but the judge allowed the person to keep his guns. Krista Heeren-Graber, executive director at the South Dakota Network Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault, said in New Hampshire and Arizona gun restrictions depend on the courthouse you go to.
