Here are the top stories in Bedford today:
- A rare super blue moon will appear in the night sky on Aug. 30. Look for this unusually bright and large moon to inch above the horizon at 9:35 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The U.S. Naval Observatory says it's extremely rare for a blue moon, which is the second full moon in a month, and a super moon, that is unusually close to the earth, to happen at the same time. The super blue moon will also make close approach to Saturn! (Space.com)
- Do you know the oldest Bedford resident? Submit their name to the Town of Bedford and they may be the next recipient of the Boston Post Cane. What is the Boston Post Cane? This storied New England tradition started in 1909 when the Boston Post newspaper crafted 43 canes made out of African ebony wood and adorned with a 14-carat gold head. The canes were handed out to New England towns, and Bedford was fortunate to receive one of the canes. Edna Jane Dubbury has held the cane in Bedford since Aug. 12, 2020, until she passed away on June 15, 2023, at the age of 105, the Town said in a recent news release. To qualify, a Bedford recipient must be a 10-year resident of the Town. Submit nominees by Sept. 8 here: (Bedford Patch)
- The Bedford Memorial Pool will close on Labor Day, Bedford Parks & Recreation announced in a recent post. Take advantage of the remaining warm summer days to visit the pool before it closes for the season on Monday, Sept. 4. The pool opens mid-June and stays open until Labor Day weekend.
