Here are the top stories today in Bedford:

  1. Encounter With Deadly Power Lines: Two New Hampshire roofers were electrocuted Monday night when their ladder came into contact with overhead power lines in Derry, police said. When the first ambulance arrived on Mt. Pleasant Street in Derry on Monday night, EMT's found both men in cardiac arrest. One man was taken by MedFlight to Mass General Hospital, and the other man was brought by MedFlight to Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Police reminded residents to keep ladders at least 10 feet away from power lines and "always look up" before raising a ladder. Storms, strong winds, and falling branches on wooded roads, like many roads in Bedford, can bring down overhead power lines. Officials say stay away from downed power lines, never step in water that is in contact with a live power line, and immediately call authorities if you see downed power lines. (CBSN Boston)
  2. Fully vaccinated breakthrough cases are on the rise: Health officials say that nearly a third of people hospitalized with COVID-19 in New Hampshire in recent weeks were fully vaccinated. Lori Shibinette, commissioner of the Department of Health and Human Services, said that the aggressive new delta variant and waning immunity from vaccines is causing the increase. Shibinette noted that about 90 percent of COVID-19 hospitalizations over the summer were unvaccinated individuals, but in October, 30 percent of people who were hospitalized with COVID-19 were fully vaccinated. In the same briefing, Gov. Chris Sununu urged people to get booster shots. Sununu said as the more contagious delta variant spreads, we could be in for a tough winter. Infectious disease specialist, Dr. Michael Calderwood of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, said it’s not that the vaccines aren’t working, but like a flu vaccine, the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines can decline over time. 3. Heading to the playoffs! Bedford High School ranked third in the Union Leader High School Football Power Poll and is headed to the playoffs. The Bulldogs will play against other clubs in the New Hampshire state championship as Union Leader High School Football Power Poll contenders. Team rankings from last week were nearly unchanged in today's poll. On Monday, the top nine teams received the official word from the NHIAA for the first round of playoffs. Division I’s first round features matchups between top-ranked clubs in the statewide poll: No. 1-ranked Winnacunnet hosting No. 10 Goffstown; No. 2 Londonderry hosting its main rival, No. 6 Pinkerton; No. 3 Bedford at home to No. 5 Exeter, and No. 4 Salem, the preseason No. 1 in the poll, at the West Conference champ, seventh-ranked Bishop Guertin.
