Here are the top stories in Bedford today:
- Delivery robots may be traveling on sidewalks and along roadways in New Hampshire one day soon. A House committee unanimously passed legislation that would enable New Hampshire to join 15 states that allow robots to operate on sidewalks and along roadways to make deliveries. Bedford inventor Dean Kamen's DEKA Research & Development Corp., in partnership with FedEx, created Roxo, a motorized PDD (personal delivery device) tested in Manchester's downtown during the summer of 2019. The bill would allow PDDs to travel speeds up to 10 mph on sidewalks, and up to 20 mph on the side of the road. The bill would require an operator to be within 25 feet of the carrier at all times. The measure will be taken up early in the 2022 session. (Yahoo News)
- Let's meet for breakfast. Tuckers Restaurant is opening Monday, Oct. 25 on River Road in Bedford. This will be the sixth Tucker's location. The owner of Tucker's said they had been looking to open a location in the Manchester area for some time, and when the former Outback Steakhouse location became available, "it was the perfect fit," Cole-Tucker said. (New Hampshire Magazine)
- Don't drink water! That was the headline when dangerous levels of PFAS chemicals had been found in the ground, flowing into the Merrimack River watershed, and had contaminated wells and drinking water in Merrimack, Litchfield, and Bedford. The toxic chemicals were discharged from the Saint Gobain plastics plant in Merrimack, New Hampshire. A years-long attempt to clean up and limit the contamination is ongoing. The Biden administration announced Monday that the Environmental Protection Agency will put limits on certain PFAS "forever chemicals" for the first time. Advocates and federal officials praised the move but said more needs to be done to protect New Hampshire's public drinking water supply. Laurene Allen of Merrimack Citizens for Clean Water said the plan is a "great start," but does not stop the source of contamination or protect our environment and families from additional PFAS impacts. Scientists say that exposure to high levels of PFAS is associated with illnesses, like kidney cancer. (Yahoo News)
- The full Hunter's moon and meteor showers will create a stunning show in the night sky this week. On Wednesday, Oct. 20, a Hunter's full moon appeared in the night sky. The full moon coincides with the Orionid meteor showers, which will reach peak viewing on Oct. 21. The meteor showers may be harder to view with the light from a full moon, but you may be able to catch a few stars blazing across in the night sky. (WMUR)
