Here are the top stories today in Bedford
- Snow! Bedford, Manchester, and Nashua may see a dusting of snow up to two inches Friday night, according to WMUR meteorologist Mike Haddad. In the North country, there is a winter weather advisory with two to eight inches of snow possible in some areas. You can find out more here: (WMUR).
- The first Native Americans arrived in New Hampshire about 11,000 years ago, according to the NH.gov website. Names of rivers, like The Merrimack River, which means "swift water place" came from the Abenaki language. The Piscataqua River ("tidal river branch") and Mount Monadnock ("mountain that stands alone") and even the name Nashua all have Native American origins. New Hampshire has a state Commission on Native American Affairs, but the Commission said they don't have the number of members they need to officially vote, in part, because they haven't had a new public member appointed by Gov. Chris Sununu in two years. Without a quorum, the Commission has been unable to act. One of the first things the Commission plans to do when a quorum is reached is to change from a quorum vote to a majority vote. Governor Sununu spokesman Benjamin Vihstadt said he hopes to receive four new applications mailed to the office in November. You can find out more here: (NHPR)
- Stay safe from COVID-19 over the holidays: Officials say that COVID-19 infections in New Hampshire are at an all-time high. There are 8,048 active cases in New Hampshire, the most since the pandemic began with 367 patients in the hospital with serious illness, the most the state has seen since the pandemic began. Five people died from COVID-19 related complications on Wednesday. Of the new infections, 23.9 percent were in children under 18. The best thing we can all do to stay healthy, the CDC website says, is to continue to follow measures that help prevent the active spread of the virus. State health officials are also urging those who are not vaccinated to get a vaccine to help protect against serious illness. Have a healthy holiday season! (WMUR)
- What are you grateful for? Patch asked you, our readers, as part of a 30 Days of Gratitude initiative. Here's what a few of our readers said: Maureen from Concord wrote she is grateful for her neighbor Jim, who is "... just one of those people who will go out of his way to help others," and Erika of Nashua wrote: "I am tremendously grateful for my colleagues — coworkers and volunteers, alike — at the Nashua Soup Kitchen & Shelter..." Here at Patch, we are thankful for you. You can read more here: (Patch)
