Sunday Morning: Manchester Fire Fights 5th Fire In A Week

Fence fire quickly spreads to two houses — with the homeowner holding off the flames waiting for firefighters to arrive.

MANCHESTER, NH — MFD received a call from a homeowner on Leandre Street who smelled smoke at 9:33 a.m. Sunday. He went outside to investigate and discovered a wooden fence ablaze within feet of his home.

He notified his family, who were still in the home, and his neighbor whose home is fairly close to the fence that was on fire. The fire grew and began to spread to both homes.

The homeowner attempted to extinguish the fire before the arrival of the fire department. He was successful in keeping the fire in check and preventing further spread of the fire.

Fire crews arrived and extinguished the remaining fire and opened up the homes exterior to extinguish any pockets of fire that had extended into the home. The fire was brought under control at 9:55 a.m. and no firefighters or civilians were injured.

MFD District Chief Michael Gamache said early detection and prompt notification of the fire department by the homeowner is the reason both homes suffered damages but are still habitable. Gamache estimated the damage at approx $10,000.
