Here are the top stories in Bedford today:

  1. Travel for Thanksgiving is expected to be a lot busier this year. AAA predicts that 53.4 million people will travel to join friends and family for Thanksgiving in 2021. That's an increase of 13% from 2020. Paula Twidale, senior vice president, AAA Travel said with borders open to vaccinated travelers, and new health and safety guidelines in place, "travel is once again high on the list for Americans" who are ready to reunite with loved ones for the holiday. Air travel is also up 80% over last year and is almost at pre-pandemic levels. So if you plan to travel for Thanksgiving, expect busier roads and allow more time to get through airport security. AAA reminds anyone thinking about traveling to consult CDC guidance before finalizing their holiday plans. (AAA)
  2. Sports safety week: The Safe Sports Network announced Youth Sports Safety Week, Nov. 13 – 20 to raise awareness and keep young athletes healthy and safe. Amy Hollingworth, executive director of the Safe Sports Network said the week is dedicated to raising awareness to prevent injury and keep young athletes healthy and to inform and educate parents, coaches, and the community about safety issues in youth sports. The week's week's activities include a fundraiser at Chipotle Mexican Grill in Bedford. You can find out more here: (Manchester Ink Link)
  3. A cleaner Merrimack River: The Merrimack River is cleaner than it was 50 years ago, but still faces pollution issues, said The New Hampshire Watershed Council. Storms and melting snow can overwhelm sewer systems and cause raw sewage to overflow into the river, especially in Manchester and Nashua, and it's a growing concern. The Merrimack River is a source of drinking water for more than 500,000 people, and according to the EPA, that number is expected to get higher. To help guide policymakers, the Merrimack River Watershed Council is conducting a survey with the Boston University School of Public Health to determine the public’s health and pollution concerns. The survey will help guide policymakers in their efforts to improve the health and cleanliness of the Merrimack River. You can find out more and take the survey here: (NHPR)
