  1. A COVID-19 outbreak was reported Tuesday at Bedford High School with 32 active cases, prompting the need for students and staff to wear masks for two weeks, regardless of vaccination status, to help prevent the spread of new infections. (WMUR)
  2. College freshman Ryan Toscano from Bedford played what may have been the best game of his early football career, helping the University of New Hampshire defeat Lafayette 19-13 on Saturday. Toscano was New Hampshire’s Gatorade Player of the Year at Bedford High School in 2018, when he led the Bulldogs to the NHIAA Division I Championship. (The Union Leader)
  3. In an email to School Superintendents across New Hampshire last Thursday, Department of Education Commissioner Frank Edelblut recommended face-to-face learning five days a week through the COVID-19 pandemic. Edelblut wrote that the exceptions are: if a student has contracted COVID-19, if a household contact of someone with COVID-19 has to quarantine, or if there are other family circumstances that prevent students from participating in person. Edelblut added that remote learning would only be "on a temporary basis" until the situation is resolved. (Conway Daily Sun)
  4. Bedford native Drew Blake, M.D., and professor Jim Smith published a paper to eliminate Hepatitis C. Blake, an alumnus of the MD-MBA program at The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College, collaborated with Tuck professor Smith on a paper modeling interventions that could eliminate Hepatitis C in people who inject drugs (PWID) in New Hampshire. (Tuck School)
  5. Staffing shortages are on the minds of New Hampshire nursing homes as they wait for details about the federal vaccine mandate. Andrew Irwin, Administrator for the Hillsborough House nursing facility, said that the concern is that some nurses, who already work extra hours to fill empty shifts, will leave. Small facilities may be impacted more as many are operating below needed staffing levels.“If we lose a single nurse, it’s a panic,” Irwin said. Despite staffing concerns, officials said that vaccines for diseases like the measles are commonly required for health providers who work with the state’s most vulnerable residents.
