Here are the top stories in Bedford today:

  1. The Veterans Day Parade is returning to Elm Street in Manchester on Thursday, Nov. 11 after being canceled last year due to the pandemic. The lively event will feature high school marching bands, scout troops, veteran's groups, and antique cars. The parade will start at 10:30 a.m., with a stop at City Hall at 11 a.m. to play taps to honor the signing of the armistice that ended World War I. The parade route ends at Veteran's Park. Dan Beliveau, the parade’s principal organizer and commander of the Manchester Veterans’ Council, said he hopes the parade will renew a shared sense of patriotism for the United States and military veterans. Organizers ask that attendees practice "COVID common sense," and anyone who has not been vaccinated against COVID-19 to wear a mask, especially at the park. (The Union Leader)
  2. If you are looking for a breakfast with foods from local farms, you may like what the new Tucker's location has to offer. The new Tucker's restaurant on River Road in Bedford brings their locally-sourced, homestyle breakfasts to Bedford. The organic items on the menu are popular with the 20-something crowd looking for farm-to-table foods, and the comfortable and casual atmosphere is popular with families. The Bedford restaurant is the sixth location since founding the company in 2014. (The Union Leader)
  3. A legacy about finding ways to work together: Neil Harl, who was best known for helping to save America's farms during the 1980s crisis, died at 88. His family includes a son, Rodney of Bedford, New Hampshire. Neil Harl, an economist and lawyer with and a long career in academia at Iowa State University, was best known for slowing the foreclosure of farms during the great crisis in the 1980s that was likened to the Great Depression. Record high interest rates drove payments on farm debt to unmanageable levels, and a U.S. grain embargo with the Soviet Union cut exports, but Harl, who came from a farming family in Iowa, worked with banks and government officials so farmers could restructure debt, enabling lenders to recoup part of what they were owed without foreclosing. He brought the two sides together, averting an even greater crisis. Burial will be in the Iowa State University Cemetery. (Des Moines Register)
