Here are the top stories in Bedford today:

  1. Fairs, brewery tastings, and many other events are happening in New Hampshire over the Columbus Day holiday weekend. The White Mountain Oktoberfest is taking place at Loon Mountain on Oct. 9 - 10. The two-day festival features German food, drinks, and events like keg-tossing and a stein-hoisting contest. If you are traveling from Bedford to any of the many events this weekend, you may have a scenic ride — especially in Northern New Hampshire where many of the trees are at peak foliage. 2. Hockey fans will be excited to finally attend a UNH Wildcats game in-person this weekend. On Friday, the Wildcats will be playing Union College at the Whittemore Center. It's the first game that the UNH hockey team has played in front of fans in 580 days. Eric MacAdams, a senior and the assistant captain of the University of New Hampshire men’s hockey team, said the players are ready to put the COVID-19-impacted campaign behind them. They will open the 2021-22 season this weekend with a two-game series. The two teams will play on Friday and Saturday nights at 7 p.m. MacAdams said that his teammates are "excited" and "can’t wait" for the games. (Seacoastonline.com)
  3. Kelly Clarkson selected a singer from New Hampshire for her team on the show last week. "The Voice" judge and coach turned her chair for country singer Parker McKay on episode 6 of the popular singing show. McKay, who grew up in New Hampshire, was the final contestant to be selected by Clarkson after she performed the song “Slow Hands,” by Niall Horan. “I’m thrilled,” McKay said on the show. McKay graduated from Exeter High School in 2009. In a pre-audition video, the Nashville musician shared an emotional story of how her mother, who had dementia, passed away just before she auditioned for the show. McKay said she was "lucky" and "thankful" that she and her father could be with her mother when she took her last breath. "She saw me into the world and I saw her out," she said. An emotional Kelly Clarkson held back tears saying, "I'm not going to cry." McKay has opened for famous acts like Rascal Flatts and Sheryl Crow. (Foster's Daily Democrat)
